AgriToken™ Undergrad Thesis Proposal

A Blockchain-Based Tokenized Agricultural Traceability, Financing, and Incentive Platform

I. TITLE

AgriToken™ System: A Blockchain-Enabled Platform for Agricultural Traceability, Tokenization, and Sustainable Financing

II. INTRODUCTION

Agriculture remains a cornerstone of economic development, particularly in emerging economies such as the Philippines. However, the sector faces persistent challenges including lack of transparency in supply chains, limited access to financing, inefficient distribution systems, and weak traceability mechanisms.

The AgriToken™ System is proposed as an innovative digital solution that leverages blockchain technology and tokenization to address these issues. By integrating farm-level data, supply chain tracking, and digital asset creation, the system aims to create a transparent, secure, and efficient agricultural ecosystem.

AgriToken™ introduces the concept of tokenizing agricultural products, enabling farmers, investors, and buyers to interact within a decentralized platform. This system enhances trust, improves access to capital, and promotes sustainable agricultural practices.

III. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Traditional agricultural systems rely heavily on manual processes and fragmented data management. Farmers often struggle with limited market access, while buyers face uncertainty regarding product origin and quality.

Blockchain technology offers immutable records, transparency, and decentralization, making it suitable for agricultural applications. Tokenization further enables the representation of physical agricultural assets (e.g., crops, harvest batches) as digital tokens that can be traded or financed.

The AgriToken™ System builds upon these technologies to create a unified platform that supports:

  • Farm registration and verification
  • Real-time data capture
  • Batch tokenization
  • Smart contract-based transactions
  • Transparent supply chain tracking

IV. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study seeks to address the following problems:

  1. How can blockchain technology improve agricultural traceability and transparency?
  2. How can tokenization be used to represent agricultural assets and facilitate financing?
  3. How can farmers benefit from a decentralized digital platform?
  4. What system architecture is most suitable for implementing AgriToken™?
  5. How effective is the AgriToken™ System in improving trust and efficiency in agricultural supply chains?

V. OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

General Objective:

To design and develop a blockchain-based AgriToken™ System for agricultural traceability, tokenization, and financing.

Specific Objectives:

  1. To design a system architecture for AgriToken™.
  2. To develop a prototype platform for farm registration, data capture, and token generation.
  3. To implement blockchain-based smart contracts for transactions.
  4. To evaluate the system in terms of usability, efficiency, and transparency.
  5. To analyze the potential impact of tokenization on agricultural financing.

VI. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The AgriToken™ System will benefit the following stakeholders:

  • Farmers: Access to financing, improved market visibility
  • Investors: New asset class through tokenized agriculture
  • Buyers/Consumers: Verified product origin and quality
  • Government Agencies: Enhanced monitoring and compliance
  • Researchers: Foundation for further blockchain applications

VII. SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

Scope:

  • Development of a prototype web-based platform
  • Implementation of blockchain-based tokenization
  • Focus on selected agricultural products (e.g., agarwood, crops)
  • Simulation of transactions and supply chain tracking

Limitations:

  • Limited to prototype scale (not full commercial deployment)
  • Dependence on internet connectivity
  • Blockchain scalability constraints
  • Regulatory considerations not fully implemented

VIII. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

1. Blockchain in Agriculture

Blockchain has been widely explored for improving traceability in food supply chains. Studies show that it enhances transparency and reduces fraud.

2. Tokenization of Assets

Tokenization enables fractional ownership and liquidity of physical assets, including agricultural commodities.

3. Smart Contracts

Smart contracts automate transactions and enforce agreements without intermediaries.

4. Digital Agriculture Platforms

Existing platforms provide farm management tools but lack integrated tokenization and decentralized finance capabilities.
